Julius E. Coles ‘63

Julius E. Coles’ illustrious higher education career as an international affairs expert spans sixteen plus years and includes his service at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, as Director of the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership, July 2012 to December 2018; Director of the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs and the Office of Global Education, April 2010 to June 2012; and Director of the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs from 1997 – 2002. In addition, he served as the Director of Howard University’s Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center from 1994 – 1997, Washington, D.C., USA.

His expertise and deep subject matter knowledge on international affairs stems from the numerous leadership positions he has held with responsibility for global initiatives. From 2002- 2009, he served as President of Africare, a leading non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to addressing African development and policy issues by working in partnership with African people to build sustainable, healthy and productive communities. Most of his career of some twenty-eight years in the Foreign Service has been spent as a senior official with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). While with USAID, Julius was Mission Director in Swaziland and Senegal and served in Vietnam, Morocco, Liberia, Nepal, and Washington, D.C.He received a B.A. from Morehouse College (1964) and a Masters of Public Affairs from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (1966). He has also studied at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, the U.S. Department of State Foreign Institute’s Senior Seminar, the Federal Executive Institute and Institut de Français.  Julius retired from the U.S. Government’s Foreign Service in 1994 with the rank of Career Minister.
